Hey, why don't we all team up to create an AFA'09 Survival Guide. Ya know, a guide for time strapped anime fan/college student who wants to maximize his time at AFA. You know like what to do, what to watch out for, what to beware of based on last year's event.

Also we can make likfe predictions on what the song line-up the artistes are gonna perform and stuff.

Sorry for the double post, but I've updated the blog with some news on AFA that you might or might not know of.

http://ntuanime.wordpress.com/2009/10/11/new-updates-to-afa09-miku-k-on-and-much-more/

So, who's going to buy the $188 concert tickets with me? XD

this is a little off topic, but its concerns my survival at AFA.

i will only be going to the day 2 concert, aka May'n and Fukuyama. and since there is apparently an autograph session, i was thinking of buying a few CDs' there to get it signed. however, i am, ultimately, a fan of May'n and Fukuyama ONLY because of Macross... and naturally, the CDs i speak of are MacFrontier's and Fire Bombers'.

so my question is:
is it considered rude or inappropriate to get them to autograph those CDs?
considering that half of frontier's vocal collection ost is not May'n's and about 1/3 of Fire Bomber's various albums are not Fukuyama's.

i could buy some of their latest albums and/or singles to get them to autograph which is the most appropriate and respectful. but i havent listened to them before and/or i couldn't "find" them, especially fukuyama's. honestly, i not very interested in regular pop songs anyway. and i will not sink money into albums i dont like, which naturally include those i havent heard.

i particularly need advice from people who frequent relevant forums/boards and know how, in general, fans think. i dont wanna go there, unintentional disrespect (as viewed by their fans) May'n and Fukuyama and get mobbed by their fans outside the hall...

haizzz, 大変だなぁ。

You've not heard of lats year's autograph signing fiasco?

Basically it's like this, for most signings by Japanese idols, they don't really allow you to ask idols to sign personal items. The reasoning behind this is that their managers want to tightly control their idol's image, and that includes any autograph they might give out to their fans. Hence the usual practice is for them to give out "autographs" in the form of pre-signed cardboard pieces, which is exactly what happened at last year's AFA, resulting in some shocked fans begging and kowtowing to get their stuff signed but to no avail. Justified or overprotective practice? That's for you to decide.

Really tough choice for the concert. I LOVE Aniki, at the same time I'm a big Macross fan and to me Macross 7 had the best music, so I really want to see Fukuyama in action. But to part with $188 is kinda painful.

Unfortunately I have to agree here. Usually it is the managers, not the idols themselves, deciding what should be autographed. Standard procedure even in Akiba itself.

Given that they are here on a very strict time schedule, don't expect those kind of upfront-and-personal autograph sessions we have come to expect from e.g. orchestral concerts.

Gestalgeek wrote:Justified or overprotective practice?

It's neither, but just right in the gray area. On one hand, we potentially might have fans with an unhealthy obsession with the idol(s). On the other hand, limiting the supply so that it never meets demand creates an aura of rarity.

i knew of last year's incident. but still, i would rather be prepared for it and not need it.

or u guys really believe the chance of a proper autograph session is so low, we might as well assume its not gonna happen... or let me rephrase: which of u going to the concert (may'n and fukuyama's concert), intent to go empty handed?

Yes, that is what you should do. Because frankly, all you will probably be getting is a piece of cardboard with their autograph on it, which, in Japan, is pretty sought after. We just aren't into signed pieces of white cardboard here in singapore.

And don't be too crazy about getting anything signed. Remember a certain individual last year who became famous almost overnight...

Too bad we didn't get to see his face. Wonder what May'n must be have throught when this happened. And don't get me started on the Waterbottle Gate scandal during Daicon earlier this year.

And to answer your question...Yes, I'm going empty handed. I would probably be too busy jumping to do anything else anyway.

Tickets for the 2 day concert opens in 10 minutes. Wonder who will be buying them?

Edit: Actually, it sells at 9 in the morning. Ahaha.

Well, the AFA schedule is out. Start planning your own personal convention timetables!

http://afa09.com/eventguide.html

I think it'd be good for our website to have some sort of coverage for the event. Because of the atypical exam scheduling this time, I don't think we can do any full proper report coverage of the event like my absurdly long report of last year's AFA, unless someone is game for that. Alternatively, I'm thinking maybe we can do a live twitter coverage of the event instead this year. I'll definitely be bringing my laptop and stationing myself at the Extravaganza booth, anyone wants to be on the floor reporters of AFA going ons?

Aside from that (I'm sure that someone can go around twitting stuff - i don't use twitter, so count me out), feel free to camp at the airport and start to stalk the artists as they come in.

i know its a bit late but...regarding signed stuff...closest thing i have is a Hirasawa Yui (K-On!) postcard by animate/gamers signed by Toyosaki Aki. Its probably mass produced for the C76 though...got it from the ACME (A Certain Magical Event, parody of To Aru Majustsu...) as the second last freebie they had left~ the other one was a ritsu...kinda happy i got yui lol...toyosaki aki has been in more animes than hikasa yoko i believe anyways...and in a lot more notable roles, this year especially. I do believe she is getting sort of type cast for moe roles though...but as Asmodeus in Umineko was an interesting change...

I was thinking we'd use the club's twitter account. I'm new to this as well, no harm trying it out. Alternatively you guys can just report directly back to me and I'll update the coverage accordingly. Basically I just need you guys to be my extra eyes and ears around the convention grounds. It'll be good if all of you bring cameras as well. I want to test out using Flickr to do live photo coverage as well.
