Anyone want to start an anime terminology wiki? Not a forum based type but a proper wiki type that we can update as the years go by...to help those who want to know the meaning of the terms we otakus use. I'll start a basic list in the next post and try to update it as i think up or come up with more key words and phrases. Feel free to add in ur own too. Yes i know there is a book that has come out that has most of these terms. But...1...its not complete and 2...not every term in there is that useful to everyone.
Decided to post it here to keep things neater for now. Its mostly just a list of the more common terms and things we might mention briefly here and there. I'm sorry the list is so incomplete >_<;; but i tried to include terms from all aspects of the culture.

Yaoi = Gay love between two or more male counterparts, but are frequently put together in seme x uke pairing. There is also a wide variety of seme and uke types where fujoushi frequently try to match up male characters into these catergories. Yaoi was originally published under the title of 'Bara' meaning rose, before it came to be known as Yaoi today. Additional points to note is that yuri (lily) was originally used to describe an uke x uke pairing, before it came to be used more commonly to describe girl x girl pairings/groupings. The term YA-O-I is also said to originate from the phrase in japanese.
YA(ma nashi) = No Mountain
O(chi nashi) = No Fall
I(mi nashi) = No Meaning
Or more simply, its a story with no storyline. Which is not quite true, as many would disagree with this phrase.

Yea, that would be The Otaku Encyclopedia book which is generally quite useful. But internet memes keep being made all the time so its impossible for it to be fully updated. Dunno whether internet memes should go into another thread but i'll add them to the list for now. Including Vocaloid, OS-tans, Touhou and yes the IT'S OVER 9000!!! meme...

Re: Anime Terminology Wiki
I actually typed out more definitions but accidentally deleted them with the power of back space triggering the back button =_=;; but i retype it with just the words itself mostly. While its just a tiny list in the otaku community, i felt that at least these words are those you com across more often. Thinking if want to add in iconic anime manga game toy/product companies characters etc memes as well...transfer or create a new thread. In any case, maybe its ezier to just list the terms out here, there is always wiki and google if u want more information on the terms.
Originally i intended to type out a decent length definition for each term. but it would start to look too crowded and would need the help of a lot of ppl to fill it up and add to it. Maybe we could start looking into some sort of database thing?

Re: Anime Terminology Wiki
Well, I can help out by updating section by section.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[B]
Baka - Idiot, moron, stupid. Usually used when scolding someone.
Bara - Rose. For example, kurobara would mean black rose.
Big Sight
Bishi
Bishonen - Pretty boy. In fact, they might look so beautiful that at first glace you might think them female. Usually appears in shoujo manga or films, and has long hair more often than not. Possibly gay.
Bishojou - Pretty girl. As in, really pretty. Drop dead gorgeous. Think FHM cover girls or Fiona Xie.
BL - short for Boy Love. Refers to an intimate (and possibly sexual) relationship between two males. Refer to "yaoi"
Boke - One half of a pair of characters that commonly appear in Japanese humor, the other being the Tsukkomi. The Boke would play the role of being a retard, and make some blindingly obvious statement, earning him a smack to the head and quick retort by the Tsukkomi. Some people find it funny. Refer to Tsukkomi.
BRS - Black Rock Shooter. Originally a song created by ryo of supercell on the popular singing program Vocaloid, with Hatsune Miku providing the vocals. The animation that came along with the song featured a dark Miku known as the Black Rock Shooter. Instantly shot to fame on Nico Nico Douga and gained world wide fame, much to ryo's delight. A number of figurines of Black Rock Shooter are in the works, and will be coming out soon. The first was supposed to be released last month, but was pushed back till Oct, so go figure. Recently, news of a BRS anime has been comfirmed, with the promo video first playing at Animelo Summer Live 09. The DVD should be out next year. See also "Hatsune Miku"
Butler (Shitsuji) - Male version of a "maido", or maid. Has nothing to do with a demon butler or a combat butler other than job scope. Think of them as professional servants.

Re: Anime Terminology Wiki
Ah yes BRS.. i actually typed this b4 it got deleted...many fans have this misconception that BRS is a "dark/black version of miku" which is understandable i guess. BRS in fact is a character created by artist-Huke and if u look at his past works u can see the development of his characters b4 BRS as well as the change in design of her arch rival (sister in the anime) Dead master. From having a red right eye (as opposed to BRS's left blue eye) to two green eyes.
As for Bara, what i was referring to in fact was Bara as in ML (the origin of yaoi and all its other derivitives including BL and shota. Also as a comparision between Bara and Yuri(lily). Bara being the standard Seme X Uke pairing while yuri is the Uke X Uke pairing The origin of yaoi was originally published in a magazine labelled as bara.
But listing it simply as a rose is ok too i guess...do note that barabara = dismantle/take apart as used by barasuisou in rozen maiden. Love the play on words in some animes ^^

Re: Anime Terminology Wiki
Then you would know who the Kurobara is, right? Heehee
No, she is not junk.
Edit: Also, you might want to add "A cat is fine too" to the section under [A]. Bonus points if you know where that meme came from.

haha...suigintou...was suddenly reminded of this lucky star x rozen maiden cross over...
Lucky Maiden 1
Konata (suigintou) So how do u eat shuu-kurimu (cream puff)
Miyuki (shinku) First you cut it in half...
*flashes to scene of poor suigintou being cut in half*

Re: Anime Terminology Wiki
Yet another update. Ahaha.
[A]
AFA - Anime Festive Asia. The first full scale anime convention to be held here in Singapore. Made history when it first came to our humble shores in 2008. May'n <3.
Ahoge - Hair Antenna. That strand of hair that always stands up from certain character's heads. Nagisa from Clannad has one. Saber from Fate/Stay Night has one too, and when she puts her ahoge down, she becomes Saber Alter. Araragi from Bakemonogatai ahoge is strangely animated, happily jumping and moving around according to his mood. Ahaha.
Akihabara - Holy Land of the Otakus. Enough said.
Akira - Might be refering to the manga Akira, depending on context.
ALTER - Figurine company. You can often find their goods at KKnM or Aniplay.
Aniki - Respectful term for "Brother". You don't usually hear this much unless the character saying it is very formal, or said brother is really respected.
Animax - Cable TV channel that shows anime. Has some pretty good shows.
Anime - Need I explain this?
Arashi - Storm, or heavy weather. That is, unless i'm missing something here....
Astro Boy - Character from a popular anime of the same name. Astro Boy has since been made the mascot for the exporting of Japanese soft culture overseas.
AT-field - 1) Absolute Terror Field. An important concept from the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. First seen as an almost impenetrable shield that can be generated by the Angels and the EVAs, then we found out it was so much more.
2) - Could also refer to the area of uncovered thigh between the skirt and the knee sock of females. A deadly moe weapon for otakus. Commonly seen in many moe-blobs shows. Tohsaka Rin from Fate/Stay Night and Tamaki from To Heart 2 are characters with excellent AT. See also Zettai Ryouiki.
AV - .....You are better off not knowing....But then again, you probably already do, right?

Re: Anime Terminology Wiki
ah lemme post some comparision/correction/further explanation to show u what i mean by some of these terms.
Adding on
An Ahoge is actually a hair antenna as u say, but its significance is that it is frequently used with foolish/clumsy characters, hence the AHO part of Ahoge. It need not necessarily be a moé trait.
Akihabara also known more locally as Akiba, located in tokyo, originated as being the most major electronics district in japan. However, as more consumer electronics good started to be sold in other places, it was reduced to being a specialist area. On the other hand, the hobby related shops began to flourish and soon Akihabara became a district filled with anime/manga and other otaku related goods, turning into more of a tourist area. Thus Akiba became the holy land of the otaku community.
Akira and Astro boy as actually iconic series. One of those that "shaped"? the otaku community. Astro boy in particular is said to be the first anime TV series with sequels.
I was going to leave someone to type out a better description of the guy known as "Aniki" and is appearing again at AFA. As well as leaving some other fangirl or whoever to type out the description for the band group Arashi.
Ah yes the AT field...i actually typed out quite a bit on that one...one of the things i take pride in knowing about. Do take note...the is a definate difference between AT-field and Zettai Ryouiki, u cannot link them directly in that sense u used.
To back track a bit, while the english text in evangelion says AT-field as being the Absolute Terror field aka the barrier of the heart, which is supposedly a force-field like field generated when one experiences terror and a need to protect oneself. It is actually adapted from a psychaitric condition where an individual experiences psychological pain when in contact with other ppl and forms an imaginary barrier around himself where he feels safe.
An important point to note is that the Director of Evangelion, Hideki Anno, first refers to the AT-field using the term Zettai Ryouiki meaning Absolute Territory, not terror, but essentially its the same idea of creating a personal area of space.
Zettai Ryouiki (original) = AT field
but
AT field =/= Zettai Ryouiki (warped)
Regarding Zettai Ryouiki...hehe...another point i elaborated extensively on...when used in its warped context...fufufu
In recent times, Zettai Ryouiki has come to be known as the area of exposed skin between the hem of the skirt and the top of the socks/stockings of females. There is even a grading system within which, the most ideal ratio is
4:1:2:5 , which is
length of skirt:Zettai Ryouiki:Length of sock above the knee:Length of sock below the knee.
Tousaka Rin of Fate/Stay Night is a ideal example of this.
A point to note however is that the female otakus have come up with a variation for males, where their version of the zettai ryouiki is the region of exposed skin between the bottom of a glove and the end of the sleeve of a jacket.
I hope that this is something that is new to u ^^
oh yea i was thinking if we should put the NSFW definition list together and somewhere else...so that the list is "generally clean".
and yea AV can either mean Audio-Visual equipment or in the NSFW sense, Adult Video.
and oh yea Big Sight definition was missed out in the earlier post..
Tokyo Big Sight is located in Ariake (district? ward? prefacture? not sure what term it is exactly) Which is also now the permanent location of the Comiket for both summer and winter. The Comiket had moved ard for several locations over the years b4 finally being fixed at Big Sight.

Re: Anime Terminology Wiki
BBS: Colloquial way of saying "forums".
Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT or 日本語能力試験): Self-explanatory. Pre-requisite for any self-confessed otaku to understanding some, or in rare cases all, of what is being said or printed in Japanese media (NSFW or otherwise).
Mottai-nai (もったいない or 勿体無い): Literally means "what a waste". Very commonly used to refer to anime series that failed to live up to its potential (Gundam Seed Destiny, Code Geass R2 etc).
Musume (娘): Formal term referring to one's daughters. Used as substitute of Ojou-san. Also a colloquial term for 'Dollfie'.
Nanpa (ナンパ): If you don't know what this is, go ask a native Japanese.
Ojou-san (お嬢さん): Polite way of referring to someone else's daughter. Implied meaning of spoiled little girl (due to living a sheltered life), depending on the tone of delivery.

Re: Anime Terminology Wiki
Sankaku Complex - A website that reports on everything and anything anime, manga, games, doujinshi, cosplay, seiyuu, idols, etc. It is also known for its prominent NSFW section.
Scanlation - A portmanteau of 'scan' and 'translation', literally, 'to scan and translate'. This involves scanning mangas and then translating the Japanese to english, using graphics editing software to cover over the Japanese text.
Seinen - Like Shonen, but aimed at an older audience (usually 18+). These have darker themes than Shonen manga, for example, they may contain graphic violence, complex philosophical musings and sometimes nudity. The female version of this is known as Josei. An example of a popular Seinen manga is Elfen Lied.
Yuri - The opposite of Yaoi, used to refer to gay love between two female characters in a manga.
I'm surprised there is no entry for 'shonen jump'... or 'uguu'
Btw, if anyone is interested, I have the source doujin for 'a cat is fine too'. desu~

Re: Anime Terminology Wiki
ahaha thx for your contribution but lemme do corrections again...
Yuri = While now is most commonly used for Girl X Girl pairings was originally used as a yaoi term to mean an uke x uke pairing (as i meantioned in the yaoi section)
i apologise for not including shounen jump and shoujo beat in the list >_<;; ごめん
i suppose musuko (son) should be listed since musume (daughter) was listed...but srsly...who in the world hears musuko being used in the otaku world as much as musume....morning musume/mecha musume i think otome should have a similar definition too
i suppose hime-sama (princess) and ouji-sama (prince) should be added too..not to be confused with ojii-san(uncle) obaa-san (aunt/old lady)
